Restoring a UNESCO Geopark

Serra da Estrela, Portugal's most important mountain region and a UNESCO Geopark, has suffered from devastating wildfires in recent years. In 2022 alone, fires burned through 22,000 hectares—25% of the park's total area. Through our partnership with Hotels for Trees, we've contributed to critical restoration efforts in this ecological treasure.

Environmental Impact

Our contribution has helped plant native species including maritime pine, cork oak, and chestnut trees. These trees serve multiple purposes:

• Restoring biodiversity and protecting rare flora and fauna

• Improving soil stability and preventing erosion

• Creating natural firebreaks to protect against future wildfires

• Preventing the area from reaching a "tipping point" toward desertification

Community Support

Beyond environmental benefits, this reforestation initiative directly supports local communities. Approximately 90% of the funding is invested in the local economy through the creation of seasonal jobs and the procurement of locally supplied plants and materials.
